Post 16 Film & Media Production

The UK’s film, television and radio industries are recognised globally for their quality and creativity, playing a vital role in both the economy and the cultural life of the country. These sectors offer a broad spectrum of career opportunities - spanning creative, technical, and managerial roles. This course equips you with a diverse set of transferable media skills, focusing on both filmmaking and broadcast. As you progress, you’ll have the opportunity to explore different pathways and develop your own specialism.

The quality of British film, TV and radio production is highly regarded worldwide and they make a key contribution to the UK economy whilst at the same time adding to this country’s cultural richness. Within these industries, there is a wide range of potential careers, from the creative to the technical and also management roles. A wide range of transferable media skills will be taught on this course. The curriculum concentrates on both filmmaking and broadcast, allowing you the flexibility to specialise as the course progresses. 

 

At Post 16 you will study the Level 3: UAL, Level 3, Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology (equivalent to 3 A Levels):

  • Create original content across a variety of industry-standard formats, including music videos, short films, documentaries, photography and more.
  • Build a strong theoretical foundation by exploring key concepts, critical perspectives, and media terminology.
  • Collaborate on live productions for both television and radio, giving hands-on experience in broadcast environments.
  • Collaborate on live broadcasts across both TV and radio. 
  • Take part in a four-day, on-location film shoot, working as part of a crew to produce a fully realised short film.
  • Participate in a four-day on-location short film shoot
  • Access work placement opportunities with professional media companies across a range of live and recorded productions.
  • Opportunities for work placements on a range of professional productions.

Being awarded this accreditation and receiving industry backing is a reflection of the quality of teaching and learning within the department and also credible proof that Film and Media at The BRIT School prepares you for entry into the industry from age 18.

We collaborate with a range of creative industry partners to ensure our students receive the most up-to-date education and real-world experience, plus access to work placements. These include:

  • Sparks Arts competitions
  • Talks from industry professionals and alumni working in this field
  • Using industry standard hardware, including a range of cameras and our own Radio and TV Studio (sponsored by YouTube Music), BRIT Live is the department’s very own magazine style show that is broadcast termly via YouTube.
  • We celebrate the success of all of our students through the department’s annual award showcase held at cinemas and venues including BFI Southbank, Prince Charles Cinema and the Ritzy Cinema Brixton. Industry are invited as well as the public. 

What Qualities Do I Need?

We are interested in students who possess and can demonstrate a passion in at least one area of media, whether it is the adrenaline rush of live broadcast or the painstaking process of crafting a film or documentary.

It is essential that you are enthusiastic and can demonstrate both commitment and the ability to work as part of a team.

If you are applying to join the Post 16 course you will need to submit a digital portfolio once you have been shortlisted to interview. This portfolio should showcase your dedication and experience in at least one relevant area of media.
