Curriculum Overview

This hands- on, busy course will give you the skills and insight into a career working in the creative industries and teaches you Costume Design and Construction, Set Design and Construction, Scenic Art, Sound, Lighting and Stage Management. You will work across all productions, events, gigs and exhibitions -  in both school and outside venues. Graduates work in lighting and sound on stadium world tours, are set builders, stage managers and costume makers in the West End and across the globe in theatre, TV and film. This course is tailored towards individuals who are passionate about the physical creations that bring theatrical productions, films, TV and live events to life.

At post 16 you will study for a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts  (equivalent to 3 A Levels):

Over two years, you will develop your skills across all areas of production: set design, construction, costume, lighting and sound, stage and production management; before focussing on a specific discipline as you work towards your qualification.

The equipment used by the department is industry standard and the department is sponsored by companies which include PRG XL Video, Britannia Row, Funktion One, indu beauty and TSL. You will be trained and mentored by industry professionals.

Industry Opportunities

We collaborate with a range of creative industry partners to ensure our students receive the most up-to-date education and real-world experience: 

  • Industry partners Britannia Row Productions, PRG UK, White Light support our students' first steps into careers providing work placements in theatres and on events including The Olivier Awards, Vogue World, The BRIT Awards and.
  • Visits to see productions from opera to musicals and plays and to venues such as the Royal Albert Hall.

What Qualities Do I Need?

  • You will need to be interested in the design and production side of theatre or live events
  • Dedicated, organised and a good timekeeper.
  • Stamina- a lot of the practical work you do will take place on productions outside of school hours.
  • Students require a reasonable level in GCSE English and maths.
  • While not mandatory, some theatre production experience in any field would be useful.
